Michael: I was born and raised in Chicago, Illinois. While attending Lawrence University (Wisconsin), I felt the Lord’s call on my life to do a special work somewhere in the world. I moved to Ann Arbor, Michigan, where I attended medical school at the University of Michigan. While there, I married Kay, an accounting student at Eastern Michigan University Kay: I was born and raised in Ann Arbor, Michigan. I have always attended church and came to know Christ at an early age. Michael and I moved to Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, where Michael completed his training in surgery. I managed his surgical practice as it grew and also managed a professional billing service for physicians. However, this was not God’s desire for our lives. He chose to move us from this comfort zone with our four children and led us into missionary work. Following the Lord’s leading, we closed the surgical practice and moved to Kenya, where we have been held captive ever since.
What we Do Since our early years in Kenya, we have been involved in a variety of ministries. Currently, our ministries include The Least of These, A Prepared Place, Face to Face, and St. Mary’s Hospital. We train and help sponsor visiting and local medical students, interns, and physicians, as well as other paramedical professionals. We also work at rural healthcare and urban slum clinics and support rural development. Below is a quick look at some of our ministries. Check out the links in the left menu for more information on The Least of These, A Prepared Place, and Face to Face. Saint Mary’s Hospital: We provide surgical and medical care for the indigent population at one of Nairobi’s premier missions hospitals. This care is subsidized by donations of materials and volunteer missionaries. Families and orphaned children from the slums are provided with compassionate care, which is part of the cure. Continuing medical education for Kenyan physicians is also an essential part of this ministry. INFA-MED (Family Practice Residency for Kenyans): We provide post-graduate education for Kenyan physicians in the practice of family medicine within missions and government hospitals. This is a three-year program with a curriculum designed to impart the necessary skills and knowledge to make competent and compassionate Christian physicians. Medical Clinics: The rural healthcare and urban slum clinics we work in are managed by Kenyan organizations and are both important areas of ministry as we serve the poor in an attempt to prevent some of the chronic healthcare problems they face. The rural areas of Kenya have only 20 percent of the country’s doctors while 80 percent of the population lives there. The reverse is true for the cities. In neither case do poor people receive adequate rudimentary healthcare. Rural Development: We work alongside Kenyan volunteers who are enabling the poor to become self-reliant. This ministry includes providing water for irrigation, agriculture, small business, and healthcare. The perks of this job go on and on, and that’s part of what holds us captive in Africa. And this captivity is something to which we encourage you to surrender. Join us in this work and experience the joy of this captivating passion in Kenya.
